Yoshiko Sakakibara Reprises Her Role as Haman Karn for OL Haman-Sama Manga PV

Publishing company Kadokawa Shoten recently posted a promotional video to commemorate the release of Arasa OL Haman-sama’s second volume. The PV features seiyuu Yoshiko Sakakibara reprising her role as the titular character to narrate the video.

Known for his comedy-ecchi works, in October 2020 mangaka Masakazu Iwasaki announced he was penning a new manga series for Gundam Ace, the official Kadokawa-published monthly Gundam manga magazine, titled Arasa OL Haman-sama(or Around Thirty Office Worker Haman-sama). As the title suggests, the manga reimagines the popular Universal Century Gundam antagonist Haman Karn as a thirty year old officer worker, along with many of the characters that appear in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and its sequel Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ.

OL Haman-sama is a slice of life story following Haman Karn as a high-level executive of the “Neo Zeon” apparel company, and the comedic misadventures of Haman in a Gundam-inspired office setting.

Yoshiko Sakakibara famously portrayed Haman Karn in the 1985 Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam series, where she was a secondary antagonist and regent of the Neo Zeon faction. Haman would be promoted to main antagonist in the sequel series Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ the following year. Haman has since become a popular and enduring figure in the Gundam franchise and among fans, characterized by her cold, ruthless nature and troubled relationship with Char Aznable. Details of her origin and this relationship would be expounded in the 2001-2009 manga Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Deleted Affair [C.D.A] ~ Portrait of a Young Comet by Gundam ZZ character designer and animator, Hiroyuki Kitazume.

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation III – Love Is the Pulse of the Stars (2006)

Sakakibara reprised the role of Haman in the 2004 Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation trilogy and in other Gundam-related projects such as Mobile Suit SD Gundam. Sakakibara also portrayed Char’s lover and chief operations officer Nanai Miguel in the 1988 Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack film.
