Following the opening weekend box office success of Gundam‘s latest theatrical film, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, the film will be featured in the Monthly Newtype magazine’s March 2024 issue. This marks the first time the Gundam SEED series has graced the cover of the publication in seventeen years.
From January 26 to January 29, the SEED Freedom film earned 1.065 billion yen with 634,000 attendees, debuting at #1 in the Japanese box office. This a monstrous start for the Gundam film, in comparison to the last Gundam theatrical debuts, Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island earned 391,483,520 million yen in its first weekend, and Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash earned 523,943,800 million yen.
The cover of the March 2024 issue of Newtype features protagonist Kira Yamato and a side profile of his STTS-909 Rising Freedom Gundam illustrated in homage to the magazine’s November 2002 issue, when the Gundam SEED series began, and June 2006 issue when the theatrical film was first announced.
The March 2024 issue will feature interviews and comments from Soichiro Hoshi, Akira Ishida, Rie Tanaka, Kenichi Suzumura, Takanori Nishikawa and more. The issue will release later in February.
The tagline of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom is “You are there inside me. Am I there inside you?”. The film is directed by Mitsuo Fukuda, featuring a script by Fukuda, Chiaki Morosawa, and Ryu Goto. Hisashi Hirai returns for character design, while the mechanical design team includes Kunio Okawara, Kimitoshi Yamane, Kazutaka Miyatake, Junichi Akutsu, Manabu Shintani, Zenseava, Takuya Io, and Hiroyuki Taiga. Satoshi Shigeta returns as mechanical animation director. Toshihiko Sahashi is the composer for the film’s music, and the theme song “FREEDOM” is performed by Takanori Nishikawa with Tetsuya Komuro.
