Visionary Dragon Ball Creator Akira Toriyama Passes Away at 68



The official Dragon Ball X account has announced the unfortunate passing of legendary mangaka Akira Toriyama at age 68 due to an acute subdural hematoma on March 1. The memo comes from Toriyama’s manga production studio Bird Studio and publisher Capsule Corporation Tokyo.

Toriyama is best known as the creator of the phenomenon Dragon Ball.  Starting its serialization in Shueisha‘s shōnen manga magazine “Weekly Shōnen Jump” in 1984, Dragon Ball is widely regarded as one of the most influential manga series of all time, having sold over 300 million copies worldwide. It has served as a significant source of inspiration for numerous manga artists, including Eiichiro Oda (One Piece), Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto), and Tite Kubo (Bleach).

Toei Animation

In collaboration with industry titan Toei Animation, Dragon Ball emerged as one of the cornerstones of the anime medium, particularly through its immensely popular 90s action series, Dragon Ball Z. Toriyama is also credited with character designs and story contributions on Dragon Ball anime media such as Dragon Ball GT and the movies Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Resurrection of F.

Toei Animation

Toriyama officially revived the Dragon Ball series with the 2015 Dragon Ball Super. For the 40th anniversary of the Dragon Ball series, a new anime was announced titled Dragon Ball Daima, which saw significant involvement from Toriyama. The anime is set to launch Fall 2024.

Toriyama also served as character designer for popular video game series such as Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger and Blue Dragon. Some of Toriyama’s other popular works include the gag-comedy series Dr. Slump and desert adventure series Sand Land, the latter of which received an anime film adaptation in 2023, co-produced by Sunrise, Kamikaze Douga, and Anima. Additionally, a planned anime series adaptation is scheduled for March 2024, along with a video game release in April 2024.

His imaginative worlds and unique sense of humor and action captivated hearts around the world, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of manga and anime. Though he may have departed this world, his legacy will continue to shine brightly, igniting the imaginations of generations. Akira Toriyama will forever remain an icon, cherished for his unparalleled contributions to the realm of storytelling.
