From the “Gundam Manhole Project,” the city of Shizuoka has received a “Gundam Manhole” and “Zaku Manhole” as donations.
The “RX-78-2 Gundam Manhole” feature a design of Nihondaira, a scenic area showcasing Mount Fuji, Miho no Matsubara, and Suruga Bay.
The “MS-06F Zaku II Manhole” design draws inspiration from model kit runners, symbolizing Shizuoka’s distinction as the “Model Capital of the World.” Shizuoka proudly hosts the prestigious Shizuoka Hobby Show, Japan’s largest annual model event, where leading model brands showcase their newest products.
Announced in 2020, the “Gundam Manhole Project” is an initiative by the Bandai Namco Group’s cross-sectional “Gundam Project” in cooperation with local governments across Japan to promote tourism to those regions, as well as express the bond between Gundam fans transcending generations across Japan. The first of these Gundam manholes were installed in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, the hometown of Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino.
