Mamoru Nagano Design Exhibition to be held at EJ Anime Museum

Announced in December, “DESIGNS- Mamoru Nagano Design Exhibition” is the first major exhibition by designer Mamoru Nagano. The exhibition will be held at EJ Anime Museum in Tokorozawa Sakura Town in Saitama Prefecture from February 10 to March 24, 2024. Advanced tickets are now on sale for 2,000 yen, with same-day tickets priced at 2,300 yen.

Mamoru Nagano has been at the forefront of creative and innovative design since his career began in 1983. Nagano is best known as the creator of the manga The Five Star Stories, which began serialization in 1986 with Kadokawa Shoten‘s Monthly Newtype. The manga received an anime film adaptation in 1989, produced by Sunrise.

Nagano’s prominent design work has been with studio Sunrise on titles such as Ginga Hyōryū Vifam(1983), Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s Giant Gorg(1984), and several works by Yoshiyuki Tomino, including Aura Battler Dunbine(1983), Heavy Metal L-Gaim(1984), Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam(1985), Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ(1986), Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack(1988), and Brain Powerd(1998).

In 2012, Nagano released the notoriously theatrical exclusive Hana no Utame Gothicmade. Produced by Kadokawa and Automatic Flowers Studio, as its original creator, Nagano also served as director, writer, character designer, storyboard artist, and key animator.

The exhibition will feature around 340 pieces of Nagano’s artwork including original drawings, setting illustrations, rough sketches and more, even from his works before his commercial debut. There will be a display of figures, garage kits and plastic models from The Five Star Stories and Gothicmade, such as “Zaratustra Apter Bringer,” from various manufacturers. The seventeen illustrations used for the covers of The Five Star Stories volumes 1 to 17 will also be showcased.

To commemorate the exhibition, screenings of Hana no Utame Gothicmade and The Five Star Stories, as well as talk shows, will be held.
