Gundam Thunderbolt Gets Gritty New Gunpla and Art Book for 10th Anniversary

Yasuo Ohtagaki’s Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt manga is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year with a new project. As previously reported, the project will include 10th anniversary ver. plastic models and a 10th anniversary art book.

The 10th anniversary model kits for the series depict the two rival mobile suits from the series, the FA-78 Full Armor Gundam and MS-06R Zaku II High Mobility Type, piloted by Earth Federation ace, Io Fleming, and Principality of Zeon ace, Daryl Lorenz, respectively. For the HG 1/144 10th anniversary versions, the two heavily armed and highly maneuverable mobile suits will be recolored with a de-saturated, muted color scheme, coupled with a metallic sheen for their respective black-gray parts and joints. This color change is reminiscent of their climatic battle in the series as the two rivals battle to the death throughout the desolate, debris-laden Thunderbolt Sector.  Yasuo Ohtagaki will also be designing new art for the packaging; prices and release dates for the model kits will be announced at a later date.

The art book is titled Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt Yasuo Ohtagaki ART WORKS and is a collection of 240 full-color pages in a B5 hardcover format, and includes two B2-size posters featuring newly drawn illustrations, and a long interview with Ohtagaki. The art book is priced at 4,800 yen and scheduled to be released September 30, the same time as Thunderbolt’s 20th volume.

The 20th volume of Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt will be available in two forms: a standard edition priced at 880 yen and a limited edition priced at 2,500 yen. The limited edition also includes a “mini-poster book” containing 32 B5-size posters.

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt began serialization March 2012 in the seinen manga magazine “Big Comics Superior”, published by Shogakukan. Over its ten-year serialization Thunderbolt has sold over four million copies. The manga was adapted in 2015 by Sunrise into a two season ONA(original net animation) series directed by Kou Matsuo, which was subsequently compiled into two compilation films Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky and Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: Bandit Flower.

Story:
It is Universal Century 0079, at the end of the One Year War between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. The space colonies of Side 4, or Moore, were previously destroyed by a Zeon attack, and many colonists lost their lives. Side 4 became a shoal zone filled with the wreckage of destroyed colonies and warships, lit by constant flashes of lightning due to collisions between electrified debris. It soon came to be known as the “Thunderbolt Sector.”
