Funimation Adds Zeta Gundam, Wing, The Origin, and Narrative

Through a new partnership with anime studio Sunrise, American anime distribution company Funimation has announced they will be adding four new Gundam titles to their extensive library of content: Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, New Mobile Report Gundam Wing (or Mobile Suit Gundam Wing), Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, and Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative.

September 7 each entry will debut with English subtitles and English-dubbing on the streamer in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. They will also launch in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru at a later date.

Airing from 1985 to 1986, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is set in UC 0087 taking place eight years after the original Mobile Suit Gundam. Directed by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, the series shifts focus to Kamille Bidan, a civilian with a deep hatred for the Titans, the tyrannical autonomous force of the Earth Federation. Drama ensues as Kamille joins the AEUG, the resistance organization combatting the Titans.

Directed by Masashi Ikeda, then Shinji Takamatsu, the 1995 New Mobile Report Gundam Wing or Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is the second major Gundam entry not set within the franchise’s long running Universal Century timeline and in 2000 became first overall to broadcast in the United States. Set in After Colony(AC) 195, growing tired of the oppressive ways of the United Earth Sphere Alliance and Order of the Zodiac(OZ), underground forces of the space colonies send five young pilots with advanced mobile suits to Earth in an effort to free the colonies from their grip.

Announced in 2014 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin adapted original 0079 series character designer and chief animation director Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s manga of the same name into a six-part OVA series. Released from 2015 to 2018, The Origin is a retelling of the events leading up to the One Year War, detailing the origin of Casval Rem Deikun, who would go on to become the legendary rival and Zeon figure Char Aznable.

Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative released to theaters in November 2018 as the first entry in Sunrise’s UC NexT 0100 project. Loosely adapting Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn’s eleventh volume Phoenix Hunting, the film serves as a sequel to the Unicorn anime series. Set one year after the events of the “Laplace Incident” in UC 0097, troubled Earth Federation pilot Jona Basta is a part of a joint military operation with Luio & Co. led by Michelle Luio to recapture the experimental mobile suit RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex; a rogue machine with mysterious ties to Jona and Michelle’s departed childhood friend, Rita Bernal. The film is directed by Toshikazu Yoshizawa and scripted by Harutoshi Fukui, with character designs by Sejoon Kim, and mechanical designs by Hajime Katoki and Eiji Komatsu.
