Evangelion, Gundam Actor Motomu Kiyokawa Passes Away at 87



Tokyo Actor’s Consumer’s Cooperative Society or Haikyo, the talent management agency for voice actor Motomu  Kiyokawa, announced on Monday that the 87-year old actor had passed away at 11:10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 17, due to complications with pneumonia. Private funeral services were held, only attended by close relatives of the actor.

Kiyokawa was best known for his role as Kōzō Fuyutsuki in the Hideaki Anno-directed Neon Genesis Evangelion anime franchise. Kiyokawa also starred as the antagonist Gargoyle in Anno’s TV directorial debut Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, an original anime series based on the works of Jules Verne. The actor landed two prominent roles in the Gundam series. In the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam series, Kiyokawa portrayed Tem Ray, the father of protagonist Amuro Ray and chief engineer of the titular RX-78-2 Gundam. Similarly, the actor portrayed Dr.Mikamura, father of heroine Rain Mikamura and developer of protagonist Domon Kasshu’s GF13-017NJ Shining Gundam and GF13-017NJII God Gundam in the 1994 Mobile Fighter G Gundam series.
