Veteran Designer Kunio Okawara Unveil Freedom Gundam and Justice Gundam Real Type Colors

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED series, legendary mechanical designer Kunio Okawara has revealed his designs for the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam and ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam in Real Type Colors. The concept of “Real Type” colors began with the original RX-78-2 Gundam as an alternate design by Okawara to give the mobile suit a more realistic color scheme for combat use, first appearing on the poster for the 1981 Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow theatrical film.

“About 40 years have passed since the birth of the Real Type, and our perspective on realism has also evolved,” commented the 75-year-old designer. “We’re excited to see how this item will be embraced by the new generation and new fans.”

Beginning his career with the 1972 Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Okawara was the first credited “mechanical designer”. He would go on to design the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam for the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam series, and continue to contribute his talents to the Gundam franchise and many other mecha anime works for over 40 years.
