To commemorate Dune: Part Two premiering in Japan on March 15, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom has announced a collaboration with the Legendary-produced scifi film.
The collaboration features a striking key visual reminiscent of one of Dune‘s posters, with protagonists Kira Yamato and Lacus Clyne positioned as the main characters Paul Atreides and Chani, respectively. This artwork is illustrated by Hisashi Hirai, the character designer behind Gundam SEED.
With the collaboration, five winners will have the chance to win one of two posters (B2 size). To participate in the giveaway, fans are invited to follow @dunemovie_jp and @SEED_HDRP on X, and retweet the announcement post. The deadline for submissions is set until 23:59 on March 28, 2024 (Monday).
Dune: Part Two is the second installment in director Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic scifi epic, Dune.
Set in a distant future, Dune follows the story of Paul Atreides, a young nobleman whose family takes control of the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the universe’s most valuable substance, spice melange or “spice.” As Paul navigates political intrigue, religious prophecy, and desert warfare, he discovers his own destiny intertwined with the fate of Arrakis and its people, the Fremen.
Releasing March 1, Dune: Part Two has grossed $379.8 million worldwide.
In the film’s seventh weekend in theaters, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom has amassed a cumulative total of 3,882,820,330 yen and selling 2,304,510 tickets.
On its third weekend, the film became the highest grossing Gundam film dethroning the 1982 Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space, which held the franchise box office record for forty-two years with 2.3 billion yen, while the 2021 Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash is the third highest performing franchise film at 2.23 billion yen.
The film premiered on January 26, debuting at #1 in the Japanese box office, surpassing competitors such as Spy × Family Code: White, Poor Things, and the live-action Golden Kamuy film.
The tagline of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom is “You are there inside me. Am I there inside you?”. The film is directed by Mitsuo Fukuda, featuring a script by Fukuda, Chiaki Morosawa, and Ryu Goto. Hisashi Hirai returns for character design, while the mechanical design team includes Kunio Okawara, Kimitoshi Yamane, Kazutaka Miyatake, Junichi Akutsu, Manabu Shintani, Zenseava, Takuya Io, and Hiroyuki Taiga. Satoshi Shigeta returns as mechanical animation director. Toshihiko Sahashi is the composer for the film’s music, and the theme song “FREEDOM” is performed by Takanori Nishikawa with Tetsuya Komuro.
