Sunrise Releases First Concept Art of Live-Action Mobile Suit Gundam Film

Anime studio Sunrise has just released the first piece of concept art for the upcoming live-action Gundam film, a co-production between the studio and Legendary Pictures.

By Industrial Light & Magic (ILM)

The film’s concept art was featured during Netflix Festival Japan 2021, produced by popular Hollywood visuals effects studio, Industrial Light & Magic or ILM. Included in the presentation was a blurb about the film and a introduction to the Gundam series:

The story for the live-action film version of Gundam is being kept under wraps but the original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted. The battles in the story, in which the characters pilot robots known as mobile suits, are wildly popular. The Gundam universe is replete with numerous story lines of love and conflict along with the popular Gundam battles, in which the characters operate robot suits called Mobile Suits.

Early April 2021, the long obscured film landed its director with Kong: Skull Island’s Jordan Vogt-Roberts, of Legendary’s Monsterverse film franchise. The film will exclusively stream on Netflix internationally, with the exception of China, where Legendary will head distribution.

As of this reporting, there have been no announcements for the story, casting or a release date for the film. In June 2021, at the 1st Gundam Conference director Jordan Vogt-Roberts released a video message to fans of the franchise, Sunrise and the Bandai Namco Group regarding the film.
