Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX #1 at Japanese Box Office in Opening Weekend



Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- hit Japanese theaters this weekend and has gotten a rave response from fans. Gundam franchise owner Bandai Namco even urged moviegoers not to spoil the film for others on social media.

In its first weekend the movie topped Japan’s box office rankings, earning 598,832,300 yen with 352,522 attendees, followed by Muromachi Outsiders in 2nd place, and 366 Days in 3rd,

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- is a theatrical re-edit of select episodes, designed as a preview of the newest Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.

After its successful first weekend, a promotional reel was released for the movie, featuring its theme song “Plazma” by Kenshi Yonezu, as well as revealing its well kept, and long theorized secrets. GQuuuuuuX will feature an alternate Universal Century timeline in which the Principality of Zeon won the One Year War.

GQuuuuuuX was announced in December during the Bandai Namco Group’s Winter Gundam 2024 Conference. Touted as the” khara x SUNRISE, a crossing of dreams,” series is the first major collaboration between Gundam studio Sunrise and Neon Genesis Evangelion studio khara.

The series is directed by FLCL director Kazuya Tsurumaki, scripted by Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno and Yoji Enokido, with character designs by take, and mechanical designs by EVA designer Ikuto Yamashita.

Story

Amate Yuzuriha is a high-school student living peacefully in a space colony floating in outer space.

When she meets a war refugee named Nyaan, Amate is drawn into the illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle.

Under the entry name “Machu,” she throws herself into fierce battle day after day, piloting the GQuuuuuuX. Then an unidentified Gundam mobile suit pursued by both the space force and the police appears before her, along with its pilot, a boy named Shuji.

GQuuuuuuX

A mysterious state-of-the-art mobile suit piloted by Machu. It participates in Clan Battle as part of the Pomeranians.

Amate Yuzuriha (MACHU)

A high-school student whose real name is Amate Yuzuriha. Machu has always felt that her daily life in a peaceful colony was somehow false. After meeting Nyaan, she becomes the pilot of the GQuuuuuuX and begins participating in Clan Battle.

Nyaan
CV: Yui Ishikawa

A courier who smuggles illegal goods. When Nyaan’s homeland was turned into a battlefield and she became a refugee, she escaped her colony alone in a petit mobile suit, with no time to even check on the safety of her family. Luckily, she was picked up by a ship and brought to a colony that Machu lives. Her highest priority is her own survival.

Shuji Itō
CV: Shimba Tsuchiya

A mysterious boy who appears before Machu and Nyaan. Shuji is wanted by the military police for painting graffiti all over the outer walls of the colony. He participates in Clan Battle in order to earn money for a certain purpose, and becomes Machu’s Mav.
