In a poll taken on the official Gundam portal site, Gundam Info, it was voted that Mobile Suit Gundam Char’s Counterattack is the most popular Gundam entry directed by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino.
Credited as the main force behind the creation of Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979, along with his peers Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and Kunio Okawara; Yoshiyuki Tomino helmed the Gundam franchise from Mobile Suit Gundam, its sequels Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, the films Mobile Suit Gundam Char’s Counterattack and Mobile Suit Gundam F91, and the 1993 series Mobile Suit Victory Gundam before taking his leave from the franchise. He returned to directing Gundam with the 20th anniversary series Turn A Gundam in 1999 and in 2014 for the 35th anniversarry Gundam Reconguista in G.

Released in 1988, the Mobile Suit Gundam Char’s Counterattack film depicts the final battle between long time rivals, Amuro Ray and Char Aznable during the Second Neo Zeon War, or Char’s Rebellion. Set in U.C. 0093 the famous Zeon ace pilot turned Neo Zeon leader Char Aznable, disgusted with the continued mistreatment of the Earth, plans to make Earth uninhabitable for human life by sending the giant asteroid base Axis on a collision course with it. The special Earth Federation task force, Londo Bell, is given the mission to stop Char and his plot.
